Can you upgrade an OptiPlex 7040 cheaply?

Nearly free — DDR4 DIMMs, 2.5-inch SSDs, and spare parts cost pennies at this age, and the micro, SFF, and tower chassis all open easily; SSD conversions transform them. Linux duty suits the platform. The cheapest viable desktop experiment remains.

OptiPlex 7040 vs 7050 — what is the price difference?

Small — the 7050's Kaby Lake refresh and newer platform typically command 10-25 dollar premiums over 7040 units at equal condition; neither carries Windows 11 on standard CPUs. Buy the better condition between them. The 7050 wins at parity. Verify the exact configuration on the Shopfox listing you are considering first.

How much is a Dell OptiPlex 7040?

Shopfox listings run $65 to $169 across 4 offers — sixth-and-seventh-gen configurations priced as utility hardware; working SFF i5 units at $65-130 define the practical band. The 7040's Skylake-Kaby era misses Windows 11 officially. Check its price history on Shopfox.

This Might Be The Ideal Thin Client

I'm a huge fan of thin client mini PCs, and the Optiplex 7040 is a steal. The 16GB DDR4 and i5-6400T quad-core CPU handle 95% of everyday tasks without breaking a sweat. The USB ports (4 in back, 2 in front) are perfect for scanners, printers, and multiple displays. It's so reliable that my family keeps borrowing it! Just a heads-up: no built-in WiFi, but a USB adapter works fine.
